On December 17, 2005, the food-grade carbon dioxide production technology developed jointly by our company and the Hubei Provincial Academy of Chemical Sciences, which meets international quality standards, passed a provincial-level technical appraisal organized by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
After carefully listening to reports on the research and development process and application of the technology, and reviewing the relevant technical documentation, the experts on the appraisal committee unanimously concluded that this technology has introduced technical improvements in key processes such as the purification and refinement of carbon dioxide feed gas. By adopting new processes and technologies—including advanced desulfurization, catalytic oxidation, and purification—and combining them with our company’s patented technology, the food-grade carbon dioxide produced meets international quality standards, namely the “International Soft Drink Technology Association Standard” (ISBT) and China’s upcoming new national standard for food-grade carbon dioxide. Food-grade carbon dioxide produced using this technology is of high quality and offers advantages such as energy conservation and reduced consumption. The appraisal conclusion states that this technology “holds a leading position domestically and has reached an internationally advanced level.”
Currently, due to various reasons, food-grade carbon dioxide in China generally complies with the GB 10621-89 “Food Additive Liquid Carbon Dioxide” standard, which falls far short of international quality standards. In terms of the number of control parameters, China’s 1989 standard includes only 7 items, whereas the International Soft Drink Technology Association (ISBT) standard specifies 20. Regarding the control requirements for each parameter, both international quality standards and those of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are extremely stringent. For example, international quality standards require: Total sulfur (H₂S + COS + CS₂) ≤ 0.1 × 10⁻⁶, benzene content ≤ 0.02 × 10⁻⁶ (i.e., 20 ppb), total hydrocarbon content (expressed as CH₄) ≤ 50 × 10⁻⁶ (of which non-CH₄ ≤ 20 × 10⁻⁶), and so on.
In recent years, as the government has placed greater emphasis on quality control indicators for food-grade carbon dioxide, China’s new national standard for food-grade carbon dioxide is expected to be released in the near future. At that time, the national quality control standards for food-grade carbon dioxide will also be very strict. Meanwhile, renowned international beverage manufacturers, such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, only procure food-grade carbon dioxide that meets international quality standards. Furthermore, food-grade carbon dioxide has a wide range of applications. Annually, food-grade carbon dioxide used in China’s beverage industry accounts for 30% to 40% of total market demand. It is also used in tobacco leaf puffing, supercritical extraction, vegetable preservation, and other fields, where it is developing rapidly and has promising market prospects.
To meet international and domestic requirements for improving the quality of food-grade carbon dioxide, protect public health, align with societal development, and satisfy market demand, Since 2001, our company has been engaged in the research and development of production technology for food-grade carbon dioxide meeting international quality standards. In collaboration with the Hubei Provincial Academy of Chemical Sciences, and through continuous experimentation and refinement, we have completed the engineering optimization design of this production technology. It has since been successfully implemented in over ten domestic enterprises. Based on user feedback, all production units are operating normally, output meets design specifications, and product quality complies with international quality standards.
The successful development of this production technology signifies that China has fully mastered this preparation technique. It plays a significant role in advancing China’s food-grade carbon dioxide industry, fulfilling the obligations of the Kyoto Protocol, and realizing a circular economy, yielding notable economic and social benefits.
Our company warmly welcomes experts and peers from both domestic and international sectors to engage in exchanges and discussions with us, so that we may jointly promote the further development of China’s food-grade carbon dioxide industry.
